Drs. Maged Barsoum and Christopher R. Jones developed the first non-uniform constellations (NUCs) optimized for Bit-interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) capacity in 2006 while working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Founders of Constellation Designs developed an innovative technique for achieving so called “shaping gains” by selecting the location and labeling of the points of any constellation based upon a measure of mutual information known as “BICM capacity” or “Parallel Decode capacity”
When used with modern codes, such as Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, BICM capacity optimized constellations can achieve significant gains in capacity. These gains allow up to 30% more throughput at a given SNR by changing only the mapper and demapper in a digital transceiver
The resulting constellations have non-uniformly spaced points and so are often referred to as “non-uniform” (NU) constellations (e.g. NU-QAM)
Constellation Designs was founded in 2008 to commercialize BICM optimized NUCs
Constellation Designs publishes libraries of PAM, QPSK, and QAM constellations for AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. These libraries are available for licensing for use in digital communication systems
